Jurassic Park in IMAX 3D

Let me start by saying Jurassic Park is and always will be my favorite movie from my childhood. It gets a perfect score from me in every way. For the 20^th anniversary of the film, Steven Spielberg decided to re-release it in IMAX 3D; and I will try to make that my focus. In short, seeing and hearing it in IMAX was very well done. And I risk being made fun of, but when Dr. Grant (Sam Neill), Dr. Sattler (Laura Dern) first see a brachiosaurus for the first time and the theme comes up, one long tear went down my face; this speaks of the excellent work from John Williams. I don’t think a single theme has made me tear up as fast as the Jurassic Park theme. Then as John Hammond (Richard Attenborough) says, “Welcome to Jurassic Park” a smile just comes across my face. From that moment on I remembered seeing this as a kid and how it made me want to be an archaeologist; and I’m sure I wasn’t the only kid to have that dream after this movie. Also, the 3D effects weren’t so bad. I’m normally not a fan of converting films to 3D or just 3D in general, but I didn’t mind this. It might’ve been due to my nostalgia over this film, but I think it was done right. When anything was in the forefront, their image was much sharper and had a greater field of depth. Even with this, the dinosaurs or scenery in the background weren’t sacrificed and I could still make out what those things were supposed to be. The crowd was also very receptive of the film; one scene in particular had everyone laughing. After the Tyrannosaur attacks and some of the group are in the control room, Dr. Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum) is just laying on his side on the table with his shirt open. With the seriousness of the situation, everyone chuckled a bit when we saw him. Speaking of the T-Rex, when her scene came on and she finally roared, I could feel it reverberate throughout the theater. I could rant on and on about seeing it in IMAX. Samuel L. Jackson is still great in his role before he really became the actor we know him as today. The Velociraptor kitchen scene still elicited gasps and the occasional jump from the crowd. Overall, I would highly recommend seeing Jurassic Park in IMAX before it leaves theaters. There was just something different about the experience and well worth the money. Old fans and those who were never introduced into this world will enjoy it all the same.
