Clacc Tape

by: Oliver Layco

About a year ago, I was on my way to graduation from St. John’s when a fellow classmate released his first mixtape. Gifted came around at a time when I needed it so it’s natural that I hold it to a higher pedestal than what may come out next from the up and coming Clacco. His newest tape is titled Clacc Tape and it definitely holds its own when compared to Gifted. And I can’t really put a finger on it, but there’s a different feel to this one; and that’s not a bad thing. Artists need to experiment, especially early on in their careers, to try and find a sound that fits what they want to be known for. If they become too stagnant, then there’s no real way for growth to occur. I guess if I did have to choose a word to describe the feel of this mixtape it would have to be, harder; if that makes sense. Or maybe gritty would be a better word. I did like the beats and how none of them were easily recognizable. And by that I mean there were similarities with what we hear on the radio or what we heard growing up, but he was able to break those down and make something fresh. In an industry that’s been around as long as it has, it’s surprising really to hear something like this. Lyrically, he’s still got it. Again, it doesn’t have the same feel as Gifted and that’s good; experimentation is key. For the style of rap I like, the tracks near the end fits my preferences better. With that, my favorite tracks include Clear It Out, Belong To You, Alone,Grown Man Biz, and Galaga. Overall, this is still a commendable mixtape and it’s only a matter of time before Clacco finds his style and makes it out there. Everyone should definitely give this a listen.
