The Importance of Belief

December 23, 2011
By James West

First of all, no, this isn’t some sort of super religious propaganda about why you should prefer my religion over yours, or lack thereof. The belief I’m talking about is the sense of wonder a child has around Christmastime.

I’ll admit, this Christmas season has not been the greatest for me. I’m in the spirit, but I feel like it went by too fast. My mind has been on other things and, more importantly, I’m focusing on the future a lot as this is a pretty vital year for me in regards to what I’m going to do with the rest of my life. But, I digress. What I’m saying is, I’m a pretty festive guy. It annoys me when anyone plays any non-Christmas music during the month of December and I need at least one holiday special/movie a day. Last year I wrote an article for another site about how important it is for the younder generation to not be so blasé about the season. Not to be so cold. And, in the course of writing this, I’ve realized something. That’s happened to me.

This year, for some reason, I’m just not quite as – emotional as I should be. Or as child like. Maybe that’s what’s been missing. I’ve been looking at things with such a cold outlook that I’ve missed many a warm fuzzy feeling, which is something I’m feeling right now as I write this and listen to the Home Alone soundtrack. Every year, I think of Christmas as a time to learn a lesson, like in a movie (I think of Clark Griswold saying “I did it” at the end of Christmas Vacation). Often I kind of force a faux lesson on myself to make things more interesting, if that makes sense. But this year I legitimately had to relearn something I had forgotten. Life is grand if you still believe in the fantastic. Santa Claus? Sure. I believe in Santa Claus. And you should too. I think that everyone would be better off if they did. Things would be a little brighter and a little bit happier – like me right now.

Life is a pretty beautiful thing all things considered. To have that childlike wonder is nothing to be scoffed at. I feel like Scrooge at the end of A Christmas Carol. Hark, the herald angels sing! So, there you have it. Nothing against skeptics, but that’s a life I could never lead. So, I have a request for anyone reading this right now who’s either not in the Christmas spirit or hasn’t been in a long time. The next time you hear “Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town”, I want you to sing a long, and I want you to mean it. He might not be a physical dude you can touch, but think of him as a spirit sorta. Like this magical thing that sweeps over everybody, an anthropomorphized version of the spirit of Christmas. There I go again with my adult talk. You know what I mean. Just get out there and do it, I mean it. The best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear.

Cultural Communist LogoThe Cultural Communist is a spirit of change who sweeps in when he sees some kind of philosophical injustice in our United States society and promptly writes an article about it, or…himself. Honestly we at Bigbluebullfrog.com haven’t the foggiest clue who the guy is or how he keeps getting into our system, but we like his writing!
